Colin Lovatt - Drums/Percussion

Colin Lovatt
Many years ago a couple of mates asked me to play drums because I was always tapping on something. I wanted to play drums from an early age, but due to the impracticalities of playing a drum kit whilst growing up in a fourth-floor flat, it was out of the question. Consequently, I didn’t get my first kit until I was 18. Being a late starter I had to learn fast so I took a few lessons and over the years did brief study stints at Goldsmith’s Music College and The ACM in Guildford.

For the last twenty-five years (not including long periods of travel and study) or so, I’ve held down the drum seat in various rock, soul, function, tribute and cover bands and played percussion in folk bands/duos, guitar based trios, a big band, Acid-Jazz bands, Latin-Funk bands and even a full-on rock/metal band!

Some of my favourite drummers include: Simon Phillips, Jeff Porcaro, Phil Gould, Stewart Copeland, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Gerry Gaskill, Alex-Van Halen, Brian Downey, Carter Beauford, Carlton ’Carly’ Barrett.

Percussionists I admire: Giovanni Hildago, Luis Conte Miguel ’Anga’ Diaz, Raul Rekow, Karl Perazzo, Shelia Escovedo, Don Alias, Lenny Castro.

It’s impossible to name all the musicians, bands, singers, songwriters and artistes I admire. The list really is endless!! They provide me with a constant source of inspiration ... as well as frustration!!
